Branch Navy

The Coalition Navy is the space warfare branch of the Coalition armed forces. Numbering at over five million vessels, it is the largest navy in existence. It is the focal point of Coalition military doctrine, consequently being assigned 85% of the Coalition’s military budget. The cylindrical, but angular, jet black ships of the Navy have become an iconic symbol of the Coalition’s industrial and military might.

History[]

The Navy was founded from the remnants of the United States Navy, United States Air Force and United States Space Command during the Endless War. Infighting and a fear of rebellion in the ranks encouraged Coalition politicians to put what they felt were the most important branches of the military under one command structure, where individuals could be more easily observed. The newly-formed Navy tried to absorb the United States Marines, but this was shot down under the reasoning that the Navy should not command enough forces to be able to act independently of the Army.

Formations[]

Naval superiority is the crux of the Coalition’s overall military strategy. Even the most powerful planetside army will fall to sustained orbital bombardment. The Coalition Army and Marines are used for nothing more than capturing worlds the Coalition desires or defending Coalition worlds from attack. Consequently, the Navy gets most of the Coalition military’s funding and was nurtured ever since the Coalition’s inception. The Coalition’s unmatched industrial might allows it to field larger, more powerful ships in larger numbers than the other two superpowers. Coalition vessels are normally built in orbit; shipyards are usually located in the asteroid belts of heavily developed star systems, melting down entire asteroids for their metal. The modern Coalition doctrine of OrbitSurface Battle calls for a quick campaign of “system hopping”: warships are to gain space superiority early in the battle, ensuring planetside forces and orbital support would not be harassed while the fleet leaves for another system to ensure a counterattack does not occur. The larger size of Coalition ships require more powerful Alkaev engines, which in turn consume more power. This forces the Coalition Navy to rely on in-system refueling stations and, in turn, system hopping. The Coalition Navy is separated into seven battle fleets, each with their own area of responsibility. Battlefleet Tripoli, in charge of the Coalition’s border with the Conseil Systems, was the first to fight during the Galactic War .

Design and Technology[]

Unlike the Conseil, the Coalition prefers coilguns to missile barrages and EMSEL batteries. A single shot from a coilgun can break through energy shielding and destroy the ship underneath. All Coalition warships are designed around a massive coilgun that runs through the length of the entire ship; one could say that a Coalition Navy warship is nothing more than a rifle with engines. Like the Army on the surface, Navy vessels prefer to fight at extremely long distances, allowing them to intercept enemy missile clouds and fight with near impunity. The massive power requirements of coilguns (and powerful Alkaev engines) do come with their disadvantages: conventional engine power on Coalition warships is very low compared to Conseil ships of a comparable class. Their point defense systems are also limited to light EMSEL batteries and small interceptor missiles. Lastly, warships have very little room for anything other than essential weapon systems: crewmen are forced to live in very cramped conditions and warships cannot carry any planetside troops, requiring dedicated troop transports. The Coalition uses missiles mainly for area denial, ship harassment and orbital bombardment. Dedicated missile boats are used for this, mostly refitted transport craft that carry over a thousand nuclear missiles each. The pride of the Coalition Navy is the John Rockefeller-class attleship . Sporting a coilgun that could create minor extinction events, it is the largest, heaviest warship in any fleet in the galaxy. They are immense, around five miles in length, and are consequently slow to produce and very expensive. There are fifteen John Rockefeller battleships in the Coalition Navy, and none have seen combat as of yet.
