The Uhuru Syndicalist Republic is an authoritarian socialist state on Neu Stuttgart IV.

History[]

Many black intellectuals disagreed with the American Empire’s cultural policies, believing that black culture was being eradicated in favor of a unified American culture. They also opposed the mistreatment of Africans in Germany’s colonies, which often involved mass beheadings whenever villages were suspected of being anti-government. A few black intellectuals then founded the Uhuru (Swahili for freedom) movement, an organization dedicated to the protection and promotion of blacks and black culture. The Uhuru movement organized mass demonstrations against German and American policies and also aided humanitarian efforts in the African continent. Uhuru was banned in Germany after Uhuru funds were found in the hands of African militants; the Americans followed suit when they were caught taking money from the Soviet Union and encouraged to start race riots. This crackdown led to a split in the Uhuru movement: most wished to stay and fight the good fight on Earth, while others wanted to leave for the pristine new world of Neu Stuttgart IV and start a free black nation there. The former was destroyed in the fires of the Collapse, but the Uhuru colonists survived to found the Uhuru Republic.

Although a left-leaning democracy, Uhuru still had a caste system whereby the richer, more educated Americans practically enslaved the native Africans they brought with them. This added to the ethnic conflicts between different African groups, which were not destroyed during the exodus. The Uhuru Republic was unstable enough without the Euskadi Revolution, which they opposed. The Euskadi communists responded by funding communist and other anti-government groups in Uhuru; when they secured Euskadi they invaded Uhuru and founded the Uhuru Syndicalist Republic. The foundation of an authoritarian socialist state did not stop war; a series of corrupt leaders emptied the state coffers into their own pockets and redistributed land to aid their cronies and hurt their enemies. The conflicts arising from this mixed with the ideological, ethnic and historical conflicts. Milleaux continued to fund and arm any group willing to overthrow the Syndicalist government, and there was no shortage of them.

Fighting between Uhuru humans only stopped when a greater enemy, the cerafi, appeared and invaded. Most of Uhuru was occupied and outright colonized by the cerafi. Although most countries exterminated or drove off their cerafi populations, the poorly-armed Uhuru state couldn’t afford to do this. Instead, the Uhuru government opted to turn the cerafi into a permanent slave caste, reasoning that this gave the poor ethnic Africans someone to oppress and that Milleaux and her allies couldn’t stomach aiding xenos. The government was wrong on the latter judgment; Milleaux funded cerafi groups as well as it did anti-government humans. Many cerafi militias exterminated entire human villages and the humans did the same to the cerafi and rival human groups. By the time of the Galactic War, much of Uhuru was not controlled by the government, but instead by warlords.

Uhuru’s troubles were exacerbated by its Galactic War-era leader, Colonel-President Prime Minister Emperor of America and King of Kings Malcom Madaki, who gained power in 2683. Madaki, like many of his predecessors, gained power by marching into the capital personally killing the former president. Unlike his predecessors, Madaki added a personal twist by torturing and then beheading the president, recording it in high-definition holofilm, and sending the holofilm to news and government agencies throughout the galaxy. Only Kang Gyala reacted positively. A superstitious man, Madaki believed that eating the heart of a living being would grant him that being’s power’ naturally, to officially “inaugurate” himself, Madaki tore out the former president’s heart and ate it. This event was also recorded and sent to the galaxy at large. In 2691, Madaki attempted to eliminate anti-government forces in Uhuru’s jungles by dusting a potent cocktail of bioweapons and defoliants all over the country. This was only successful in spreading disease and destroying Uhuru’s crops, adding famine to plague and war. Madaki used Euskadi and Conseil aid as a weapon; his forces captured care packages and either sold the food to the starving or poisoned it and gave it to his enemies. Monetary aid was used to purchase New Carolinian uranium; when the government was unable to pay, entire villages were captured and sold as slaves. Uhuru did join the other communist powers in the Galactic War, but contributed little more than poorly-armed militias. Many Uhuru cities were destroyed during the Coalition bombardment, but Madaki managed to escape and his forces are still fighting in the fallout.
