John Marcus Compton, Jr. is the 41st Supreme Director of the Coalition of Western Republics.

HistoryEdit

Early LifeEdit

John Compton was born on May 2, 2695 in Greater Columbia, Columbia Prime. His father was an electrical engineer who worked in starship manufacturing until he passed away in an accident when John was five. Forced to work for income, Compton’s mother, Amy, left him in the care of various charity organizations and, when they became available during the height of Director Morris’ welfare program, government child care centers. He stayed in such facilities until he was ten, a fact Compton openly resented.

As a child, Compton preferred to read and tinker with toys rather than play with the other children, which troubled his mother, who was far too busy to do anything about it. According to a day-care instructor who asked Compton why he wouldn’t play with the others, he reportedly said that they were too complex and inconsistent, that his toys and books always stayed the same and that he wanted to help the other kids become easier to handle, but they wouldn’t listen.

Reportedly, even at an early age Compton was fascinated by science, understanding the basic principles behind faster-than-light travel when he was in pre-school. The abundance of science and engineering books, left by Compton’s deceased father, helped him quench his thirst for knowledge. By age 11, Compton was determined to continue in his father’s footsteps and enter the engineering field. In school, Compton always succeeded in science and mathematics, but had difficulty with classes such as social studies and language arts. His school days, Compton and his confidants both agree, were a time when he was unabashedly supportive of the Morris administration and repeatedly stated that he wanted to ‘kill every heretic (he) could get his hands on.’ This attitude was considered strong even in those times, an attitude that he would later reject. He graduated from Johnston High School, 51st in his class of 421.

Military LifeEdit

Instead of being conscripted, Compton elected to join the Coalition Army as a mechanic, a job he reportedly loved. He served in the Sylhet War, repairing tanks on their way to the front. It is during the war that he met friend and future political ally, Norman Sibley. Compton was only exposed to combat once during his three-year service in the war, in the Battle of Minbla Ridge, where he killed an enemy trench raider. Compton reportedly stated to his friends that ‘the only thing I felt when I killed that alien son of a bitch was his skull caving in.’ He credits this event as his ‘first step to manhood.’

After the war, Compton decided to continue his education. He applied for, and was accepted to, Wellington University where he majored in engineering, with a minor in computer science. During this time Compton was described as ‘distant, but kind and helpful when approached.’ He displayed increasing interest in artificial intelligence research and wrote several papers on the ‘beauty of the machine.’ It was here that he joined the DSS Party Loyalty division, which had promised reduced tuition fees to its members. Although given a chance to study for a PhD, Compton instead joined the DSS, which needed an attaché with experience in engineering for the growing Project Hare. The DSS assigned Compton to the CWRS Pacifica, a battleship outfitted with a heavily modified gravity drive. It was in this program that he was reunited with many of his old war friends, including Sibley. After dozens of successful missions with Pacifica, Compton was involved in the Pacifica Incident. During the event, Compton stated that he ‘saw what lay beneath the thin veil of reality’ but also claimed the event helped him clear his thoughts and he knew what his purpose in life was. He reported feeling watched by a ‘cold presence’ for ‘what felt like several hours,’ but never said he felt threatened and that later it felt a great sense of comfort and elation.

Being the only survivor of the incident, Compton underwent several psychological examinations, which determined nothing more than that he ‘experienced hallucinations’ during the event. Nonetheless, Compton emerged from the incident a changed man. He reported that he could solve mathematical equations much faster than before and he developed a sense of intuition that allowed him to avoid problems he would otherwise face. The incident was another event that Compton says ‘proved his destiny,’ and he reportedly decided to become Supreme Director when the incident occurred. It was during this incident that he decided to later join the DSS Naval arm. For this, he enrolled in the Feliciano Grandeza Naval Academy and passed with flying colors.

Compton was sent to the front lines of the then-young Galactic War and performed exceptionally. In his most stunning victory, then-Commodore Compton he repelled the Conseil fleet invading the Manchester system in 2748 with minimal losses. Reports of his victory and several of his papers on naval battle tactics reached the eyes and of the Directorate of Defense and Directorate of State Security. After the deaths and disappearances of many of his competitors, Compton was finally promoted to Admiral at the age of 54 (one of the youngest admirals ever in DSS history).

One of Compton’s first priorities as Admiral was taking command of the DSS’ decaying auszeit program, a topic he took interest in after Project Hare. He ordered the cleansing of several alternate Earths, took more control of colonial governorship and drew up invasion plans for Vacuity pockets that had only been explored. With regard to the Galactic War, he oftentimes took direct command of both DSS and Navy vessels, much to the Navy’s ire. He promoted the use of Vacuity-based talkies in order to communicate with vessels in real time and ordered to have the entire DSS fleet refitted with them.

Rise to PowerEdit

Over the next few decades, he would lead the Coalition fleets to victory after victory against foes both human and alien. His detractors referred to his successes as dumb luck. Indeed, Compton seemed very lucky. During the Battle of Frederickwelt, the defending Conseil fleet was ravaged when its gravity drive-equipped ships malfunctioned and jumped into the Vacuity. Compton and his allies took this as a sign that God was on his side. In 2765, even Supreme Director Applegate took notice, and Compton was promoted to Supreme Commander of Coalition Naval Forces.

This promotion earned Compton many enemies, mostly among the Navy and the Directorate of Defense. It was then that Compton’s old friend, Norman Sibley, contacted him. A top agent in Naval Intelligence, he warned Compton of an assassination attempt. It’s unknown whether or not Compton did anything to prevent this attempt, but in 2771, in what the Coalition government maintains was a completely separate incident Navy vessels fired on a civilian ship containing Supreme Director Michael Applegate as he was entertaining the Navy’s top officers.

An emergency election was held for both Director of the Navy and Supreme Director. Sibley, as the new Director of the Navy, led the charge for Compton to be promoted to Supreme Director. This was a controversial decision. Compton was not officially part of the Coalition Council, and while there was no legal statute saying that the Supreme Director must come from the Council, every single Supreme Director has come from it. However, Compton was a military hero and his political views matched the extreme Internationalist trend of the time. The Council eventually decided to break the old tradition and made Compton the 41st Supreme Director of the Coalition of Western Republics.

Compton’s first task as Supreme Director was to punish the Navy officers responsible for killing his predecessor. A list of over five hundred names, coincidentally containing many of Compton’s rivals during his admiralship, was presented by a joint investigation by the DSS, NCPDF and Naval Intelligence. These men were immediately hunted down throughout the galaxy, although some have managed to escape. The escapees have become the subject of a new brand of Coalition bluefodder, which demonizes the traitors at every possible opportunity. Compton continued to support auszeit travel, devoting more Coalition forces to retaking the Sol System to invade alternate Earths only accessible from there.

Second Galactic WarEdit

Unknown to the avast majority of the Coalition, Compton had long secretly conspired with the heads of the Conseil and the Technocracy in keeping the public placated by continuing their perpetual antagonism between the three superpowers in fear of outright discontent and rebellion from the populace. Ultimately, Compton and the conspirators instigated a second Galactic War to silence public distrust of their own governments.

Unfortunately, the war had repercussions. The war soon became unpopular and spawned numerous mutinies in the Directorate of Defense and the NCPDF, in which Compton responded by declaring a state of emergency and entrusted the power of the Coalition into the hands of the DSS, with Director of State Security Henry Miller promoted to Supreme Commander of the Springfield Pact. This move only alienated the NCPDF and the other long time rivals of the DSS. As a result, the DSS abused their new-found power and influence that only deteriorates the Coalition's war effort, especially when putting Coalition soldiers against their own people. This culminated into the NCPDF and the military revolting against the DSS-run government, and forming the Five Generals. With the chunk of the Coalition military might gone and becoming his enemy, Compton resorted in the approval of a DSS artificial intelligent program, Athena, that would lead an unmanned armada against the rebel military. However, Compton's reliance on Athena would proved his downfall as the A.I. came into contact with an unknown entity that caused it to go rogue and turning against the Coalition, causing the Athena Rebellion.

Reduced to holding up in Columbia Prime that was besieged by Athena, Compton took his own life.
