Kingdom of South Anglia

Motto
Anglia Prevails ()

Language: English
Type of Government: Totalitarian

The Kingdom of South Anglia is a British remnant state and currently in a state of civil war with the Protectorate of Lancaster and claims to be the legitimate descendant of the old British state. South Anglia’s croixist leadership calls for a return of the glory days many centuries ago, especially despising the Americans and communists that took it away. A staunch ally of the United Technocracies and the Cathay Federation, South Anglia’s ruling party promises its people daily that by the grace of God, one day the galaxy would be properly British.

History

South Anglia is unique in that its claim to descent from the republican, pre-Collapse British government can be backed up. The world, having survived the Collapse largely intact, was the last refuge of several high-ranking British leaders including the Vice President. Once stationed there, the government decided to prevent a massive war against them and made no claims to any British systems, instead sending broadcast probes to inform soldiers that they could go to South Anglia if they wish. The Anglian government made no attempts to fight breakaway states like Alnwick. This decision is widely criticized by the currently ruling Phoenix Party, which blames the republican government for being cowardly and not taking worlds that could have made Anglia a superpower by the 28th century.

After the Collapse, Anglia focused on rebuilding what they could, fighting minor factions but staying away from large, aggressive powers. A surge of anti-Americanism and anti-communism rose up as reports of Collapse-damaged areas flowed in. Both superpowers were blamed for the Collapse and the republican government felt itself threatened by its own people. Pragmatically, the government decided to renounce its past as an American puppet and restored the monarchy, with the closest royal pretender at hand placed as king. The government also pledged to be more aggressive and regain more lost territory. This scheme caused problems in that it gave many groups in the area, especially a rising state claiming to be a restored Republic of China, turned their attention to Anglia. The Chinese waged a war of conquest against the British government and succeeded in establishing a foothold in Anglia itself, although their concurrent war with various resistance groups forced the signing of a peace treaty. The Republic of China will have possession of the northern hemisphere of the world, while the Anglians keep the south and any colonies they had prior to the war. The old British government was overthrown and replaced by the Kingdom of South Anglia, a weakened Republican Chinese ally.

Although South Anglia reluctantly fought with the Republic of China against Eurasia and Cathay, they lost and South Anglia was “liberated” from its treaty obligations. South Anglia could once again rebuild its military in exchange for alliance with Cathay, an opportunity the South Anglians gladly accepted. They were to be the watchdog against the Republic of China, building a massive system of trenches, walls, minefields and bunkers along the common border. The South Anglians participated in the Cathay war against Eurasia and were awarded with the cold, pseudo-terraformed world of Alnwick V.

The renewed South Anglian pride manifested itself in the Phoenix Party, a nationalist anti-Coalition, anti-communist party that modeled itself off the old croixist government of the Great War (although adopting a totalitarian agenda). The party’s rally cry of “Anglia Prevails” and demands to attack the Coalition systems nearby could be heard throughout the streets and by 2600 it was the most popular political party in South Anglia. However, it still lacked a supermajority necessary to ram any legislation into action, prompting party leaders to ask their new ally, the United Technocracies, for aid. The United Technocracies, currently embroiled in the Laguna Crisis, wanted a new anti-Coalition power in the area and agreed to help. Classified records indicate the United Technocracies responded by sending agents to burn down the Parliament building and covertly spreading a virulent strain of the Lazarus virus throughout the world. The Phoenix Party blamed the crisis on communist rebels and Coalition agents, respectively, and their popularity soared to even greater heights. Taking over the government, the Phoenix Party went about their program of “purifying” South Anglian society. Anybody not meeting the Anglian ideal, which was being Anglican, of European descent and not being a “communist” or “Yankee” was exterminated. An extensive electronic surveillance system was set up to keep an eye on the public at all times.

For over ninety years, the Phoenix Party reigned supreme with only a few assassination attempts. Then, in 2698, a Catholic anarchist set off a nuclear device under the newly rebuilt Parliament building and sparked off an attempted anarchist revolution. Although the revolution was easily crushed, it did spark dissent in the system of Norwich. A group of religious MPs, inspired by the Holy Dominion of Christendom and Oliver Cromwell’s old Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, aligned with anti-Phoenix military commanders and Coalition agents and declared the independent Protectorate of Lancaster. While the Phoenix government was left intact, a civil war broke out throughout the kingdom. The Anglian Civil War eventually merged with the Second 240-300 War when South Anglia joined an alliance with Cathay and the Republic of China declared war on the part of Lancaster. By 2740, decades after the war’s start, some systems have fallen completely under South Anglian or Protectorate control, while others are still raging battlefields. Devastated by war, South Anglia has become more and more dependent on Technocracy aid.

In 2747, the Coalition of Western Republics provoked an attempted uprising against the South Anglian government as a casus belli for the United Technocracies to enter the Galactic War.

Trivia

  • The world of South Anglia is based on the setting of Alan Moore's graphic novel V for Vendetta. The Phoenix Party is based on Norsefire; the biological attack that granted the Phoenix Party government control and the Catholic terrorist (based on the character V) who destroyed the Parliament building are based from the film adaption.
