Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in the Sol System. Named after the Roman god of war, Mars, it is often described as the "Red Planet" as the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance.

Named after the Roman god of war, Mars has become the opposite of its namesake and is the most peaceful planet in the Sol System. Mars was the first alien world humanity had major involvement; the Kaiser’s banner flew proudly in its red skies in the 1990s and it was fully terraformed in the 2130s. The initial terraforming of Mars was not without its problems, forcing its inhabitants to live in sealed-off glass domes for many decades, where even use of air was charged or taxed. The terraforming also failed to create adequate radiation shielding for the first colonists, resulting in rampant mutation throughout the lower classes.

After devastating nuclear attacks during the Collapse, Mars was plunged into a period of unending civil war. The American government took refuge on the world before departing for the Columbia system, sacking the world before leaving for good. The wars raged until the planet was united under the banner of the United Martian Directorate in the 2400s. The UMD arose as a hypernationalist Germanic organization that rejected both Soviet communism and American “western” culture which they associated with the Collapse by looking back to Nordic lore. Associating Mars with Tyr (still the official name of Mars according to the UMD and the origin of their symbol), they underwent a massive campaign of “purification.” Strangely, the UMD did not target the mutants of the world, claiming they were a part of the new “Tyrian” nation distinct from the destructive peoples of Earth. However, the Martians themselves were far from peaceful, attempting to conquer Earth thirteen times between the unification and the Coalition conquest of their long-awaited prize.

Modern Mars is an extremely autarkic state, although it maintains some ties to the Coalition out of sheer pragmatism. A heavily industrialized world, Mars routinely sells much-needed supplies to Coalition forces at extremely high prices. It also allows limited tourism across Mars’ famous canal system. Militarily, Mars is still a formidable force, and could theoretically oust the Coalition garrison on Earth if it devoted itself fully. But the true power of Mars is defensive: every Martian citizen is required to undergo military training, and every household has at least one government-issue standard firearm. The valleys and mountains of Mars are filled with intricate cave systems designed to confuse the enemy, and hidden artillery placements that are nearly impossible to pinpoint before it’s too late.

Mars maintains several bases on Luna (such as the massive “Black Sun” research facility) and its own moons, Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is noted to be the crash site of the United Americas Corporation ship Vespucci, a gravity drive-equipped ship. Because of this, it is rumored that the Martian government maintains a primitive Vacuity portal on Phobos, but the Martians are silent on the subject.

The question of native life on Mars was originally thought to be a resounding no in the early ages of mankind. However, locked deep in the ice of Mars’ polar caps, early terraformers discovered tiny samples of microbial life. This life was the first definitive proof mankind had of native life existing on worlds other than Earth. The microscopic aliens, known now to be completely unrelated to any Earth life, were mostly bacteria and viruses that were actually far more complex than most bacteria and viruses on Earth. The Martian government has taken advantage of this, developing an advanced bioweapons program that, while behind the superpowers’, is formidable for a planetary government.
